Steve has served as the Chief Deputy Coroner at the Champaign County Coroner's Office since 2010 under the leadership of retired Coroner, Duane E. Northrup. Steve has completed over 500 hundred hours of training in death investigation and has conducted approximately five thousand death investigations. Steve is a member of the Illinois Coroners & Medical Examiners Association, International Association of Coroner’s & Medical Examiners, International Association of Arson Investigators, Past Secretary of the Fraternal Order of Police – Illini Lodge 17, Illinois Fire Chief’s Association, Past Vice President of the Champaign County Fire Chief’s Association, and Past President of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System – Division 28.
As Coroner, Steve will continue to serve the citizens of Champaign County by conducting honest and independent medicolegal death investigations while ensuring the highest level of compassion, dignity, and respect for the deceased and their families.
The Coroner's Office must conduct independent medicolegal death investigations as neutral experts, free from political pressure. Justice is best served by an independent Coroner's Office.
I have completed over 530 hours of death investigation training including: Lead Homicide Investigator, Infant & Child Death Investigation, Aquatic Deaths, Suicidal Deaths, Motor Vehicle Deaths, Overdose Deaths, Train Incident Deaths, Fire Related Deaths, Emergency Operations, and Elder Abuse Deaths.
I have investigated the cause and manner of over 5000 deaths including 56 Homicides, 413 Accidental Deaths, 91 Suicidal Deaths, 91 Motor Vehicle Deaths and 4 Fire Related Deaths.
Had a great time at the 2024 Lincoln Day Dinner. Met some great people. Grace Khachaturian presented a fantastic Keynote speech.
I was honored to spent time with scouts from across the area at Holy Cross School discussing the Coroner's role in government and job duties.
Opioid overdoses are on the rise nationally. Champaign County is not immune from the epidemic. I was happy to participate in a free Narcan giveaway in cooperation with CU Public Health and Steve Born, Liaison for the funeral directors to the Illinois Opioid Task Force.
I was honored to attend a Lunch & Learn Event with Gift of Hope and several local funeral directors. Several members of my staff attended as well as Jane McFadden, Vermilion County Coroner.
I am proud to support and encourage participation in the organ and tissue donation program.
I attended the kickoff celebration for National Donate for Life with the awesome folks from Gift of Hope. The event was held at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. We got to hear from a kidney transplant recipient and the mother of a young donor who lost his life but was able to save/enhance the lives of others through donation.
Powerful message from both about the importance of providing hope to others by becoming an organ and tissue donor.
Today my Chief Deputy, Martha Rice, and I participated in a mock DUI presentation at Rantoul Township High School. A great group of students watched intently as they saw some of their classmates take on the roles of the injured and dead.
Thank you to the Rantoul Police Department, Rantoul Fire Department, AMT Ambulance, and the faculty at Rantoul High School for inviting us participate.
Thank you to Mark Medlyn for bringing your Parkland College Class by the Coroner's Office for a tour and to learn about the Coroner's Office operations. I had a great time talking with these young students.
On May 2, 2024 Unity High School Students stopped by the Coroner's Office for a tour and to learn about the Coroner's Office operations. What a great group of young people! Thank You Champaign County Sheriff's Deputy Alexander James for bringing the class to the office.
