Steve has served as the Chief Deputy Coroner at the Champaign County Coroner's Office since 2010 under the leadership of retired Coroner, Duane E. Northrup. Steve has completed over 550 hundred hours of training in death investigation and has conducted approximately five thousand death investigations. Steve is a member of the Illinois Coroners & Medical Examiners Association, International Association of Coroner’s & Medical Examiners, International Association of Arson Investigators, Past Secretary of the Fraternal Order of Police – Illini Lodge 17, Illinois Fire Chief’s Association, Past Vice President of the Champaign County Fire Chief’s Association, and Past President of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System – Division 28.
During my 37 years in the volunteer fire service and 14 years at the Coroner’s Office, I have assisted families through some of the most traumatic times in their lives.
I have consoled families who lost their home to fire, helping them get connected to community services that would help them get back on their feet.
I know the feeling of devastation from having performed CPR on a cardiac patient to later learn they did not survive.
I have knocked on a door at two in the morning to inform a family that their loved one had passed.
I have read notes and watched suicide messages that were left behind, trying to explain to their families the feelings of hopelessness and despair they felt.
I have witnessed the effects of the opioid crisis on our community. This called me to action, becoming a partner with Rotary’s SMART program to train and distribute Narcan to save lives from opioid overdose.
I have sat with families as they shared fond memories of their loved one’s life.
I have witnessed too many times the inconsolable grief of the mother of a young homicide victim.
There were times I felt helpless in trying to assist families through those traumatic experiences. Often, it was just enough to hold a hand, listen to memories, or make phone calls to ask a friend to come be with the family.
These are chapters in my life that have made me a compassionate, caring, and dedicated, son, brother, uncle, friend, neighbor, fire chief, and coroner.
I have proudly served our community with unwavering compassion, caring, and dedicated service to others, making me the most qualified to continue to be Champaign County Coroner.
I hope you will support my election for Champaign County Coroner. The citizens deserve an experienced, knowledgeable, and well-trained professional Coroner.
As Coroner, Steve will continue to serve the citizens of Champaign County by conducting honest and independent medicolegal death investigations while ensuring the highest level of compassion, dignity, and respect for the deceased and their families.
The Coroner's Office must conduct independent medicolegal death investigations as neutral experts, free from political pressure. Justice is best served by an independent Coroner's Office.

Opioid overdoses are on the rise nationally. Champaign County is not immune from the epidemic. I was happy to participate in a free Narcan giveaway in cooperation with CU Public Health and Steve Born, Liaison for the funeral directors to the Illinois Opioid Task Force.
I was honored to attend a Lunch & Learn Event with Gift of Hope and several local funeral directors. Several members of my staff attended as well as Jane McFadden, Vermilion County Coroner.
I am proud to support and encourage participation in the organ and tissue donation program.
I attended the kickoff celebration for National Donate for Life with the awesome folks from Gift of Hope. The event was held at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. We got to hear from a kidney transplant recipient and the mother of a young donor who lost his life but was able to save/enhance the lives of others through donation.
Powerful message from both about the importance of providing hope to others by becoming an organ and tissue donor.
Today my Chief Deputy, Martha Rice, and I participated in a mock DUI presentation at Rantoul Township High School. A great group of students watched intently as they saw some of their classmates take on the roles of the injured and dead.
Thank you to the Rantoul Police Department, Rantoul Fire Department, AMT Ambulance, and the faculty at Rantoul High School for inviting us participate.

I have been in the volunteer fire service since 1987. In 1989, I completed the 120 hour Fire Investigation Course at the Illinois Fire Service Institute. This year marks the 35th year I have served as a Fire Investigator and a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators.
The IAAI is an outstanding organization that provides training and support to fire investigators worldwide. The organization is built on the belief "I will bear in mind always that I am a truth-seeker, not a case-maker."
I am proud to say I have been a member for 35 years and counting.
On June 3, 2024 I had the pleasure of talking with the Active Senior Republicans about my experience working in the Coroner's Office for the past 14 years and my recent transition to Coroner in January.
I am always happy to talk about the important work the Coroner's Office does and the positive impact a strong, experienced, knowledgeable, and independent Coroner brings to the county.
I had a great time participating in Independence Day parades in Tolono, St. Joseph, and Rantoul. It was awesome to see so many friends and neighbors celebrating our countries freedoms.
One of the most important freedoms is the right to vote. I need your support and vote in November to continue to serve this great county with my experience, compassion, and knowledge as Champaign County Coroner.
Today I was honored to be asked to speak at the Gift of Hope Coroner Collaborative Event in Bloomington, Illinois.
I was asked to talk about the collaboration between the Coroner, Law Enforcement, State Attorney, EMS, and Fire Departments to facilitate organ and tissue donation.
This week I attended the 30th Annual Medicolegal Death and Homicide Investigation Conference in Springfield. Fantastic 3 days of training presented by national experts in the field of death investigation.
